Perhaps your printer only prints black-white. In that case add the -monochrome option to your command line.

Not sure that the problem is then. We print monochrome PCL periodically to our HP printer and it prints without complaint.
We just tried
- convert logo: logo.png
convert logo.png -monochrome logo.pcl
display logo.pcl
and it displayed without complaint. We're using ImageMagick 6.2.9-6, the current release, and GhostPcl 1.41 (a PCL interpretter).
